Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital is one of the latest buildings to benefit from the reliable passive fire protection properties provided by Promat SUPALUX®. The board was chosen to protect against fire, from both inside and outside a newly constructed fire escape and plant room extension.
SIG Distribution provided the products for the hospital project. “SIG sell Promat’s hardboard, grids, insulation and fittings, they were a ‘one-stop-shop’ for sourcing all the necessary components for this project” comments Promat’s David Murden. “As a supplier of the materials, SIG accommodate the customers extremely well and we worked closely with them to make this project run efficiently.”
“Fire protection is always of paramount importance but never more so than with a new hospital building,” says Peter Barnett of Studio 4 Architects who designed the new extension. “For this particular project, Promat SUPALUX® was an obvious solution. We knew it could be relied on to provide the required level of fire protection, but could also be used on both the external walls and internal partitions.”
The scheme involved a new fire escape around which a new plant room was also constructed. “This was a fairly unusual situation where the construction of the new boiler room adjacent to the fire escape resulted in potential fire threats from both sides” comments Promat’s David Murden.
Over 600m2 of 12mm thick Promat SUPALUX®was used on the project. It was a particularly good choice for the external walls, where it was installed underneath the external cladding. Because the board retains its dimensional stability even in damp or harsh conditions, it can be installed at an early stage in the construction process.
Promat SUPALUX®is a strong and lightweight high performance board which is ideal for many different fire resistance and general-purpose building applications. It can be used to provide up to 240 minutes fire protection and has been extensively proven in a huge range of applications over the past 30 years.
