Work is in progress on a state-of-the-art new headquarters for a well-known broadcasting company in the heart of Cardiff. The 150,000 sq ft, five storey headquarters will house around 1,200 staff and be located next to the city’s Central Station in the centre of the Capital Square regeneration scheme.

The decision to rebuild the headquarters in a new location came about because the current location of the company in Llandaff was deemed too costly.

Creating a watertight basement

As the location of the development is so close to the River Taff that flows through Cardiff, specialist waterproofing materials were needed for the basement of the development, which is below the water table.

The team at SIG Distribution Cardiff, led by Tom Jefferson Cardiff Area Sales manager, supplied a range of Sika waterproofing materials for the basement and sub-basement levels of the development. An area in the region of 100,00m2 required waterproofing and SIG Distribution supplied Sikaproof A08, Sikaswell 2010, Sikaswell S-2 and Sikadur 31, along with groundwork materials.

The benefits of an experienced team

Waterproofing specialists Sika specified the products to the main contractor and provided technical support. SIG Distribution supported groundwork and civil engineer contractors Churngold for the groundworks of this project.

Tom Jefferson explains, “Due to our strong relationship with Churngold and previous experience of supplying Sika waterproofing to similar projects, we decided it would be beneficial for both ourselves and Sika to meet with Churngold to discuss the best solution which led to us supplying the Sika waterproofing material to site.”

“Before we began work on the project, Churngold Project Manager Rob Kislingbury and I sat down and went through the drawings to work out a stock profile and split the job into sections to make calling off the materials easier.”

A pro-active service from SIG Distribution

Tom visited the site regularly to ensure there were no problems with the deliveries and to keep on top of the stock. As such large quantities of stock were needed, deliveries had to be made intermittently, taking into account that the site is in the centre of Cardiff so drop off space was limited.

Churngold’s Rob Kislingbury commented, “Tom and the SIG Distribution team were key to the delivery of the correct quantities at the right time, which was vital for this fast track programme.”

He continues, “The benefits of working with Tom and the team were the good relationship we had, and the attention to detail and enthusiasm Tom gave us with all aspects of the project.”

SIG Distribution provided the first delivery of Sika waterproof membrane in May 2016 and the waterproofing stage of the project was completed in October 2016. The whole project is set to be completed in Autumn 2018.
