Corrosion Under Insulation
Corrosion under insulation can be due to many causes, but the most common factor is the presence of water in the insulation system, with the use of water absorbent materials a contributory factor.
Despite the best efforts of operators and contractors to find ways to seal insulation systems, it is almost impossible to keep water out. This can lead to many different oxidation problems, including:
- Normal oxidation due to the presence of oxygen and water
- Oxidation caused by deposition of salts due to evaporation on hot surfaces
- Stress corrosion
- Galvanic corrosion due to dissimilar metals
These problems cost the industry tens of millions of pounds in repairs and lost time each year, as well as raising serious health and safety issues.

Flexible Pipe Insulation
This insulation is a flexible, high density and mechanically robust, closed cell thermal insulation material based on extruded elastomeric foam. The product has been specially developed to provide enhanced thermal resistance for industrial applications.
Aerogel is engineered to deliver maximum thermal protection with minimal weight and thickness. Unmatched in sub-ambient, cold cycling and cryogenic applications.
These systems have been developed for their fire performance, M1 NFP92-501 Epiradiateur Test, BS476 Part 6 Class O, Part 7 Class 1, ASTM E84 Class A, ASTM D635 (HB) RINA and its low smoke evolution on burning with no harmful gas levels as defined by the International Maritime Organization Resolution.
Produced in a block form and then fabricated into a wide range of shapes and sizes to satisfy industrial and commercial insulation requirements. This is manufactured in a full range of standard thicknesses and it is available in standard SI and Imperial formats.
In combination with dense and light-weight refractory bricks or concrete, Calcium Silicate is the ideal back-up lining. Due to the low thermal shock resistance the boards are not suitable for front sided use.
The sections are supplied split and hinged for easy snap-on assembly, and are especially suitable for the thermal and acoustic insulation of industrial pipe work. Rock fibre is a thermal insulation made from mineral wool and specifically produced for building equipment and industrial installations.
PIR insulation is suitable for a wide spectrum of applications. Whilst retaining all of the benefits of rigid polyurethane insulation, PIR has a considerably increased resistance to burning and spread of flame.
PUR insulation is suitable for many types of use including: insulated panels and composites; temperature and hygiene controlled environments; and bodywork and refrigerated vehicles.
